COMO LAS MONARCAS
COMO LAS MONARCAS
By Alondra Flores
what could we do with all the time wasted?
all the time spent hoping for a change,
all the time waiting for things to get better.
the promises made every four years
by the lesser of two evils,
treating us as bargaining chips
in Uncle Sam’s grand performance
this time around, his name is El Tío Sam,
disguised as neighbors and teachers,
people who look like you but act like them,
who are like you but wish so badly to be like them.
mi México lindo y querido,
mi pueblo fuerte y unido
in the wind, my spirit is blowing,
carrying the pain of not knowing
what it’s really like to be home
they tell me to go back to where I belong,
pero lo que no saben es que I’ve been wanting to for so long
