The theme of this issue is Raíces/Roots as expressed and interpreted by and across the East San José community. We are humbled at the response we received from a diverse range of contributors who touched on culture, legacy, familia, identity, activism, solidarity, and so much more.
Their stories continue to remind us that raíces are history, educación, cultura, comunidad, acceptance, tenacity, struggle, justice, resilience, pain, survival, joy, beauty, and cariño –sometimes all at once. Roots remind us that East San José has always been in the fight for justice and that it has always been home to strong leaders -both the acknowledged and unsung. It is an honor to bear witness to the stories and histories held by our community, and it is a great joy to share these stories entre familia.
Eastside Magazine was created to capture the heart of East San José by highlighting the community’s deeply rooted history, cultural vibrancy, ample assets, and considerable resources.
The magazine features the important work of organizations in East San José and stories of commitment and determination that contribute to the community’s growth and strength.
Through this magazine, we aim to emphasize a sense of pride, appreciation, and understanding of East San José as not just an important point of destination, but a home with a rich cultural legacy as the heart of San José.
